A plain guide to AEO and GEO for Nordic B2B buyers: how assistants pick firms, what an engagement covers, and how to judge progress.

When a buyer in Oslo, Bergen or Stavanger asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Google AI Overviews which agency or supplier to use, the answer names a handful of firms. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) are the work of making your business one of the names those assistants can find, understand and cite.
This guide is written for Nordic B2B firms deciding whether to invest in that work, and how to tell good delivery from renamed SEO.
AEO focuses on being the source an assistant quotes when it answers a direct question: clear, extractable passages, consistent facts and structured data that agrees with the visible page.
GEO focuses on how generative answers frame a category: which firms they list, how they describe each one, and which third-party sources they lean on to decide. In practice the two overlap, and most engagements cover both.
Assistants rarely rely on one source. For Norwegian and Nordic queries they tend to combine a firm's own site with business registers, directories, comparison articles and industry roundups. A firm missing from those sources is often missing from the answer, however good its own website is.
Language adds a twist. Many category terms carry far more search demand in English than in Norwegian or Swedish, so the strongest plan usually covers both languages and puts entity and citation work ahead of chasing low-volume keywords.
A guarantee. No agency controls what a language model cites, and no contract binds OpenAI, Google, Anthropic or Perplexity. Commit to verified deliverables and honest reporting, including the months when nothing moved. Our longer checklist is in how to evaluate an AEO agency.
Much of the technical foundation carries over. What changes is the unit of success, from a ranked link to a mention inside the answer. Switching from an SEO agency to AEO covers what to keep, what to add and what to stop paying for.
